RDC Give Away

Lessons are learned every day at the studio. The lesson learned from the RDC Trade Show is; never stand around to see who wins one of our works.

Beyond this hard lesson learned, the show was very successful! We are commissioned to design a large rug for a major Boston interior designer for one of his clients. We also made great contacts showing the laminated art glass now produced by RM Global, who received several commissions for art glass.

New Visions for Architectural Art

2010 continues a movement only the 21st Century could usher in: the harmonious merging of Art and Architecture, not by gesture or tradition, but through design integration. Modern Architecture, as itself a sculptural art form defining spaces, responding to culture, economies, environments and politics, can envelope the pedestrian experience in structurally artistic ways. Technologies everywhere await their utilization in architecture as fine art building components. Where we focused on program in artful ways, we now have a voice in integrating fine art as programmatic response.

New Media is a wide scope of experimental art forms, and has existed for many years in studios, galleries and performances. The line drawn between New Media art and Architecture is fading. Electronic visual art captured in building components such as glass, metals, lighting, textiles, etc., gives us an opportunity to explore true 21st Century decorative arts, but as the physical building blocks of our three-dimentional responses to "need." Where we for so long have designed buildings without art, where our works became, if I may use Le Corbusier's phrase, "machines for living", and art was the response by end users to humanize, personalize and tactify such spaces, we have given away perhaps one of the most important elements of architecture.

Public projects, private projects, both types offer the architect challenges and opportunities for invention and genius. Designing with artful building blocks as a building's DNA infuses "life" into our glorious but otherwise empty spaces. Seek out those programmatic opportunities and define not by purist or elitist means, but by harmonious celebration and embracing of humanities fundamental need for art, as humanity has informed us since Lascaux.

Wall Covering Design

Our wall covering product line development for a major international client continues for 2010. We're excited because of the challenges this work presents to us. It is not just about the visual design but the understanding of what is technically possible during the manufacturing process, including embossing, metallics, textures, etc. Working with these three-dimensional attributes along with the two dimensional design, requires a balance of sensitivities. Neither can incorrectly dominate without purpose.

Our laminated art glass GROWS

One month after our premiere at Build Boston, our laminated art glass has received so much interest that we have joined forces with RMGLOBAL. RMGlobal acquired our laminated art glass line, taking us with it to continue development of the product, further the creative explorations and expand the markets where laminated art glass will make inspired and innovative additions. The liquidoranges STUDIO continues in the fine art of product creation through our New Media fine art, handtufted art rugs, china and dishware, etc. Our glass now has the opportunitiy to be globally integrated into architecture and interiors.

BUILD BOSTON 2009

Build Boston, held at the Seaport World Trade Center this week was perhaps the most exciting event liquidoranges has attended to date! We premiered our laminated art glass to the public (and our competitors) for the first time. Michael Del Sesto of Advantage Glass (our partner in this venture) and I could not believe the overwhelming response we received. The booth was incredibly busy, all day for all three days. I spoke to so many architects and designers that I started loosing my voice. What has emerged from the show are several solid opportunities for immediate projects. Also what has emerged is the envy of our competitors. Our process is secret, as it should be, and I can not imagine giving it away and sacrificing all the artistic opportunities I feel within me to push this forward as truly an integration of fine art and architecture. Special thanks should be made to all the representatives of Schuco who were so supportive, interested in our art glass, and took Michael and I out to dinner at Anthony’s Pier 4 restaurant. We have already secured our booth at next year’s Build Boston Event, same 800 aisle but on the other side so we don’t have a column blocking views to our exhibit. Next, it is on to New York, Miami, and possibly LA. Things are going to get very busy for us, and we are discussing the possibility of establishing a showroom in downtown Boston for our glass, as well as the relocation of liquidoranges STUDIO HQ. Stay tuned.

AIA Rhode Island - "It's all about glass"

On Thursday, November 12, 2009 liquidoranges presented our laminated art glass to the Rhode Island chapter of the AIA, at an event hosted by our glass partner Advantage Glass Company, Cranston, RI. Seen here in the left photo are stunning laminated glass art coasters given away to all attendees. On the right is the upcoming Build Boston display in progress, seen in the Advantage Glass shop. What is missing on the display is the nine foot high laminated glass art entrance, which was not available in time for the AIA event. We are absolutely thrilled by the response received at the AIAri event.

Laminated Glass Art in Architectural Interiors

Increasingly, environmentally conscious designers and architects are working to bring in more daylight to interior spaces. Solid walls which once supported privacy and used toward the gesture of "art" within the work environment are becoming transparent. Glass Art is positioned to play a huge role in this movement to eliminate solid walls for light transmitting ones. When a solid wall is removed, the "art" is displaced. I use the term art in quotes, because art is usually a critical component of our lives, not considered by the very people creating our spaces. Glass Art has three distinct advantages: 1) glass is a recycled and recyclable material, which makes it very attractive to LEED certified projects. 2) the transparency of glass offers essential light transmission into the dark center spaces of buildings, and 3) Glass Art brings into our environments a creative and inspiring addition to interior spaces where we spend 8 - 10 hours each day. Glass Art can offer filtering of activities through textures and patterns, as well as redefining architectural interiors by its projective qualities for cascading beautiful colors across spaces, changing throughout the day, month and year. Finally, artists have an opportunity to collaborate more regularly with those whom shape our world.

Our latest laminated glass art project!

This is our latest work for a glass company's corporate headquarters. Currently going into manufacture, we will post photographs of the installation once complete. Our focus with this work was to weave the art into the entrance such that their ascending stairway beyond can be seen, suggestively before entering. The idea is to elude to, but not reveal all which lies beyond, while creating a work of art in glass to captivate the imagination of their clients for all that is possible.

Naturally, we're very excited to see this work come to reality, and will keep you posted.

LAMINATED GLASS ART IS HERE

Stunning is NOT strong enough to describe these Laminated Glass works. The very nature of the art film interlayer offers unbelievable "projection" effects, where the art glass designs cascade across everything in their path. This is a glass product like no other! These samples, fresh from the laminator are FLAWLESS, including the edges, which are polished to PERFECTION. One of the secrets to the success of this product is our exclusive use of Low Iron glass, which is so wonderfully clear it does not alter our artworks in the least. There is no "green" tint. We can provide this in any size required for a specific application with our project specific commissioned artworks. Stay tuned for photos of installations! We've got two in the works already.

We don't say enough about our UK/European marketing group, Designer Products Online. We are so incredibly pleased with the services they provide we felt we had to say something here. Designer Products Online is fast becoming THE resource for architects and designers around the world. They are BETTER than the USA equivelants, like Sweets and ARCAT because they actually talk to us on the phone, send out press releases to gazilliions of qualified recipients and tireless deal with our fickle change-of-mind approach. If you are considering hiring Designer Products Online, PLEASE contact Reese Schroeder here at the studio for more information. We have not regretted a single moment using them as our source of marketing abroad.

F&T Group, Flushing, NY visit

liquidoranges STUDIO was invited to the ribbon-cutting ceremony of F&T Group’s Queens Crossing building in Flushing, NY, Saturday, August 8, 2009. F&T Group is a global real estate conglomerate doing business in the USA and China. Their e888 division, QC/StyleFolio International Senior Vice President, Mr. Michael Chan invited liquidoranges STUDIO for the day to partake of various celebrations, and to meet with perhaps the world’s finest bone china manufacturer, Yong Feng Yuan Industry Co., LTD. We met Michael in Atlanta where he came to our booth with great ideas and opportunities for collaboration.

We dined at
Mulan, enjoying lobster, ribs, and traditional Chinese dishes, with the chairman of the board of Yong Feng Yuan Industry, Mr. Liu Quan Hui, and members of his entourage visiting the USA for the first time. They were here to unveil their stunning “Auratic” line, which I have to say was absolutely flawless in its execution. It was such an honor to meet Mr. Hui (seen in the photos if you click the Auratic link) and to present liquidoranges STUDIO design work. We presented Mr. Hui with our “New Media Fine Art Works” ©2009 book (v2.0) and photographs of our fine bone china prototypes, which were very well received.

Web site improvements

we’ve put in a lot of hours making the site more user friendly by improving navigating and menus. as we go to the various markets, our products need to be directly accessible through our web site, so we’ve added “buy now” buttons to darn near everything. there is still much to be improved upon, but our steady efforts on the site are starting to pay off. All the help, advice and suggestions we’ve received from our contacts around the globe, as well as internally within the STUDIO have made our site better and better.

Two big changes you will notice are the giclee page, and the glass art film page. now there’s a sculpture page link off the glass art page. our modern line rugs site will be updated very shortly to include our latest samples, updated pricing for square sizes, as well as better organized page formatting for ease of use.

liquidoranges STUDIO heads to Queens Crossing, Flushing, NY tomorrow for a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the F&T Group, where we will be having lunch with a new manufacturer of interest. we’ll take pictures!

Rugs as Carpet as Tile

Its such a natural transition. Having created so many square art works over the years based on the simple principle that in the digital world, the binary code of ones and zeros sets up the ultimate proportion: 0x0=0, 0x1=0, 1x1=1: the square. From our artworks, Willard Custom Carpets in Laren, Netherlands is commencing with three new works, capturing our art in handtufted rugs, as SQUARE rugs.

And now, liquidoranges has been asked to design modular carpet tiles for a major North American, world renown carpet maker. The square proportion is something we have mastered for nearly twenty years, and ironically as we have taken steps to break away from this logic in our newest art works, it comes back to us! From rugs, to rugs as carpet, to carpet, to carpet as tiles. It’s a perfect match for us!

Back from Atlanta

Back from Atlanta! The AmericasMart Home Goods show was absolutely huge. Four buildings, 7 million square feet, connected by sky bridges. A John Portman enterprise. A huge thank you to my wife, Julia Schroeder who stepped in at the last minute and went for the entire show, jumping in to set up the booth and provide relief to me and Matt Weiss. Not only did she step in to fill a void, she solved the several booth presentation issues we had. Jan Willard came from Laren, Netherlands but FedEx did not deliver his rug samples until the following Monday, the day Jan had to leave to return home. His latest samples are ABSOLUTELY STUNNING and will be photographed for the web site shortly. I was nearly speachless when the rug samples revealed themselves from the packaging. You can see one of them on the Atlanta page.

A very special thanks to Matthew Weiss for his excellent work in the booth. Matt made some really promising contacts for us which we are pursuing.

We were approached by two magazines interested in publishing our china. We met hospitality groups interested in the entire concept; glass, wall art, china and rugs. We have SO MUCH to do, and the next several weeks are going full tilt, working through all our new contacts and opportunities. There are many, many excitings yet to reveal themselves here in this blog, but I assure you, as they unfold and become public, you will read about it first right here.

vertical surfaces as art

liquidoranges is launching a series of wall covering designs for a major North American manufacturer. We see this as yet another opportunity to further our new media explorations into beautiful product development. We’ll be able to share more about this venture as it progresses, so keep checking back here for updates. Elsewhere in the studio, we are preparing a print series for a retail test run. Atlanta looms, and has all of us scrambling to get everything ready. Thanks goes to our friends at ICL Imaging for the continued production of our art glass films, and our show sign. Dan, your commitment to liquidoranges is phenominal.

Sunday is my 50th birthday. Today, Cary, Matt and Paul surprised me with a Dunkin Donuts Coffee Card and a large portfolio case! Now, they just walked in with cupcakes, so I have to go.

DOMOTEX MIDDLE EAST 2009

I am sitting at the airport in Zurich, Switzerland struggling through my 11 hour layover. This trip has been such an incredibly exciting experience for me, and one of tremendous potential for liquidoranges. My talk was well received, and the Jan Willard rug interpretation of our 111600 design was a great world debut. We received many people from the Middle East, India, Kenya, Syria, Netherlands, China, and even Canada. There is much work to be done at the studio, as my desire to contact each and every one to share my thanks for their interest in liquidoranges.

We will post the talk given at DOMOTEX on the website in the coming days after some audio filtering and clean-up work is done to it. Also, we will be posting photos of the event to share the experience with our studio followers and friends. Check back here often as the Blog takes on new life with more and more exciting news and coming events.

And finally with this entry, I wish to share my great new friendship with Jan Willard of Willard Custom Carpets. Jan is responsible for my speaking engagement, and most importantly for the initial development of our 111600 rug. What a time we had in Dubai; Jan, I’m picking the bar’s from now on. :-)

|

Reese Schroeder to speak in Dubai

Reese Schroeder has been invited to be a guest speaker at the DOMOTEX Middle East 2009 Trade Show in Dubai, UAE. I will be speaking about liquidoranges art and the complexity of adaptation into hand woven rugs. Our principal efforts over the past year have been to work with rug manufacturers who offer the highest quality hand weaving, taking our designs and interpreting them as a work of art for the floor. We see this as an important trend in architecture and interiors as buildings adopt Green Design protocols, specifically the requirement for increased day lighting. We are already seeing more transparency in architectural interiors where traditional placement of artworks is shifting to other positions. The flooring surface is perhaps the greatest blank canvas an artist could want, and our first effort through Willard Custom Carpets in The Netherlands is a remarkable example of this trend.

Open House Presentation - Partial

This is the video presentation from our first Open House, Wednesday, April 22, 2009, hosted by Pandith’s. The entire presentation is too long for YouTube and the music used is copyright protected and thus removed from this video. The event was a HUGE success on many levels, from meeting new people, design professionals, etc. to meeting new business relationships. The food and wine were excellent, and our glass partner, Advantage Glass brought their crew to erect an 8’ tall glass film sample. The rugs were a big hit, as well as the artwork. But the biggest sensation of the day was undoubtedly the glass art film, now ready for sale after months and months of testing. A special thanks MUST go to Mr. and Mrs. Pandith for their incredible hospitality. Big hugs to to Susan Stanley for her endless support, flying in from California to help with the final setup and details. Big kisses to my best friend, my wife Julia for her perfect hostessing, and my daughter Amanda for managing the guest book. What a great first year. Just wait: year two is already exploding with international growth in new product development and sales potential.

Philosophy of Dish Design

In terms of design, I look for horizontality and hierarchy of order in the physical shapes of these dishes. I see the horizontality of the flat plate design much as I see the horizon of the earth. It is more like a table for life than a bowl or sphere. I like the flat plate style because it suggests reaching out, away from the center towards infinity, which places powerful symbolism on the food, not only as sustenance but the core of humanity’s existence. I don’t want to “cradle” the food; I want to place it on the horizontal plane where it rises above that plane as the essential truth. In fine cooking, the creativity, skill, talent and finally presentation is better represented on a flat surface. It allows the culinary composition to be seen without shadow or distraction. The hierarchy of forms affects the introduction of the designed elements added.
|

Dinnerware in Final Design Phase!

Our growing artisan relationship with a company in Shanghai, China has propelled us forward in our objectives regarding fine bone china dinnerware. Samples are now in the studio being examined, measured and evaluated toward the final art design each piece will have. It is very important for us to ensure that the selected designs work together as a composition. Specifically, how the salad plate, dessert plate, soup plate, coffee cup and saucer all stack sculpturally. Part of the design process is making sure the art design bands are appropriately visible within a hierarchical protocol. We are currently developing the three designs as seen on our web site, and will have actual finished product samples within the next four weeks. Stay tuned, as this exciting component of the studio comes to life in a big way!
|

New Potential Rug Source

liquidoranges has made contact with a rug maker in the Netherlands who is producing a sample for us. The intent is to be able to access the broader consumer market with our studio designs through digital loom production. Also, we are in the final stages of negotiation with a manufacturer of fine bone china and hope to have prototypes of our three designs soon. Work continues on our art glass film development. A fairly large work is in the final stages of design here at the studio while testing of various film materials continues through our manufacturer. The scheduled installation is for March 2009, and photographs of the work will appear here on the blog page. There’s going to be a big PARTY too!

We have just released all new marketing materials which will be in the hands of designers and retailers in a matter of weeks. We are also positioning the studio to participate in select national trade shows. More about that soon.
|

The right opportunity - The right time

liquidoranges continues to grow in concept and depth on a daily basis with further development of new products which are inspired by and utilize digital art. This week, we launched a series of pages including Art Glass, Masonry, Tapestries & Textiles and Dish Collections. Some of the work is so new that the web site is not updated. But one really stunning product development is; Dish Collections. We have established a b2b relationship with a manufacturer of quality dishware in Pennsylvania who is able to take our digital design work and apply it as a ceramic glaze, fired at 1500F degrees for a permanent, beautiful pattern. Currently, two such designs match our hand-woven rugs. How awesome is that?

So, it is with incredible enthusiasm that we have posted our first
Employment Opportunity at liquidoranges. We are looking for that artistically inspired Global Sales Executive to facilitate moving the ever growing list of products to the professional design and consumer markets. Check it out!

2009 Rug Collection

The beginnings have begun. I have five designs being hand woven into 24”x36” rug samples through Pandith’s , Inc., a premier rug dealer located at the Boston Design Center. Samples will take about 10 weeks to make, as each one is woven by an artist-weaver in Kashmir. Once the samples arrive, they will be on display at Pandith’s showroom, except then they go on the road. Anwar Pandith is a wonderful gentleman who seems as excited as I am about getting these sample rugs. He has suggested I put an event together when they arrive, inviting designers in for a presentation. So much to plan for. These are very exciting times at liquidoranges as momentum builds; rugs in production, prints being made, opportunities to pursue art glass design. 2009 is going to be a fantastic year!
|

Superlative Rugs and Tapestries

liquidoranges is at the threshold of a relationship with one of the premiere rug makers in India. Discussions are ongoing and sample rugs will be woven and placed on display at the Boston Design Center. Stay tuned as this becomes finalized. More to come.

Latest Artwork - Ambient Subliminalism

This latest work moves into a different direction for me; one of subtlety and suggestion. As I worked on this painting, my biggest difficulty was not to blow out the intensity of color which I tend to do because I like bold color. Also, there were additional layer attributes going on in the background which I worked and reworked for days, which the viewer may probably not “see” but lend to the textural feeling and detail. this one nearly went into the “works in progress” folder where other works languish for years until I decide to rediscover them, but something made me finish it. The process of working through this piece generated an irony of thought: I want to be etherial and wispy, almost ghost-like in form, but the conclusion of this work has driven me to reconsider the graphical nature of what I do. Out of the ambient subliminalism comes the renewed need for strong definition of line and form. So, that’s where I think I am headed next.....

This work is numbered 102108. It is 221.1 megs, 30”x30” at 360dpi. The version you see here is 144k.

PHOTOGRAPHY PAYMENT PLANS

liquidoranges is offering payment plans to all firms due to the current economic situation. Shoot now, pay monthly. Send us an email for details!
|

The Economy: Photography, the new push

With the declining economy, I wonder just how long architectural firms can survive as commercial credit freezes solid, stopping clients in their plans to build. To remain viable, marketing efforts are kicking into high gear in a survival of the fittest environment. Architectural photography can be very expensive and in times like these, potentially out of reach for many smaller firms. liquidoranges may just be the most economically feasible solution for these firms as we typically offer full shoot prices around $800. Being fully digital, there are no real expenses for us beyond travel and CD/DVD disks. For web solutions, even those are generally not required as we post finished works on our FTP download site. We are here to help because we are in this mess with the rest of the creative industry, and the world.
|

For contemplation

My time in art school was focused on the classical training of scale, composition and proportion. As with architecture, I believe those rules apply more than ever today and I interpret them within a modern context. What I work for is a “Zen” moment where order is found amongst chaos, where surrounded by energized environments a moment of peace exists. I want my work to have depth, richness of textures and forms to explore, with a place where the eye and the mind come to rest. It is that place where we can introspectively view ourselves both separate from and relative to the chaos around us.
|

experiential video referencing light and digital matter

A short video exploration of simple form, light relative to sound as an experiential work.

|

Latest artwork - explorations with metallic decomposition

I started this work in Illustrator, creating basic shapes of motion with the pen tool, no stroke, with blue as the in-fill. The shapes were rasterized, grouped and distorted both through stretching and three-dimensional warping along a spherical path. The shapes were imported into Photoshop where layer attributes included inner and outer glow, drop shadow, pillow bevel among other subtleties. The shapes were duplicated into a new layer with similar attributes and rotated, stretched further to create a tension between the forward and behind forms. Working with gradients and manipulating the shadow colors and layer type to multiply, I used the eraser tool using a very, very large brush type which looks like a sponge and started eating away at the forms. The results appear as decomposing metal, with every removal of digital material leaving behind scarring and depth, due to the layer attributes in place.

The official title is 063008, but the resemblance to flight suggests another title. Perhaps you can suggest one?

Parallel realities exist as we exist. They are alternate destinies, alternate choices and alternate paths following along side us through our lives. When I look at the edges of my reality, there are windows into the next. I look into the parallel adjacencies of everything we consider as given, and I see everything possible. Hope, unity, life. These forces cross between the lines to bond all of us together. My art is a scrapbook of sorts for the things I can see when I journey across the boundaries of my personal reality. Maybe I cross over into yours, and you recognize something in my art. Maybe my art is completely foreign. The journey is endless.

New Work

Finished this work this evening. This painting began March 28, 2008 as a black background. I worked in Adobe Illustrator, creating line work in layers, adding layers of radial gradient's, removing large parts through erasing, and constantly testing the order in which things occur. Once I had all the parts and pieces working reasonably well, I exported to Adobe Photoshop where further layering, adding and subtracting of material was performed. In its fully expanded Photoshop format, the file is 1.3G at 300 dpi. Compressed, the work exists at 469.3M. It represents how I work, the process of building colors, forms, vector lines, etc. with challenges and decisions to be addressed along each step. Constant assessment of the work takes place until I feel I have achieved a composition satisfying my own eye. But once again, this work started with the intention of being something completely different, and the observations and choices I made throughout the process drove it in another direction.

The objective of this work was to describe fibers, initially as fabric but evolving into more electric-like streams, moving and shaping around a global force. The force began as a multi-atribute sphere which was heavily manipulated both texturally and saturation. Once the force was established, the motion could occur around it, like a tumultuous digital event.

Hope you like it.

Digital Art out of photography

Something I don't often do, and certainly do not pursue right now is exploring the digital manipulation of photography. It is a very tricky fine line to follow between creating an artful work and simply screwing with an image. The example below is one that teeters on the line, maybe leaning over the edge toward uneventful manipulation, versus resulting in a digital art work, because the original photograph all by its self was already very interesting to me. So, its for that reason I probably post it here on the blog page.

FormZ Publication by Andrzej Zarzycki

Andrzej asked me to review several papers written by architecture professors from around the country regarding digital design. It was an honor to be asked and a challenge to fulfill, as the level in which Andrzej thinks and solicits thoughts from others is exceptional. Knowing where to start and how to approach someone's critical writing in order to comment intelligently was difficult for me. Andrzej is very much about documentable or explainable process, where I am about explorative serendipity; I know where I start, and I know what I have when I am finished, but I have no idea in hell sometimes what happens along the way.

If you have a chance, you can download Andrzej's publication, or I think you can purchase the hard copy following the same link below.

the value of digital fine art

To say that digital art is of limited value is contradictory to the meaning of art. The perception of value is presupposed by traditional attitudes regarding art, as tangible struggle expressed through physical means to describe emotion or document time, or both. If the "value" of art is it's market potential as an object or item for sale to the highest bidder, then the value of art is that of commodity. If there is any joy to be held at being in the presence of something that continually gives to the visual and intuitive senses, that makes us want to look at it for what it gives us intellectually, then joy is a definable value associated with art. Joy is tangible value.

If, for there to be value, art must exist unique to all else, and there be no duplication such as to be an "original", consider photography, lithography, wood block prints, and other art forms. If being "original" puts art out of the hands of people who want to possess it, and places it as an elitist thing for the very few, then the purpose of art is defeated.

So let digital art determine its value the same way as all other art forms. Judge it by content, not by commodity.

without art, there is no architecture

without art, there is no architecture. artistic influence on buildings benefits not only individuals in possession, but those who are personally removed, as observers. artistic influence can cause a community to gather in unity, and lack of art can cause confusion, outrage and objection. with art there is hope. the dreams and values which demand art make the statement to society that there is more to our existence than rational and pragmatic need; that humanity embraces the desire for enrichment of life through exploration of our souls and the response to our emotional connectivity with our surroundings. architecture which exists without the soul of art is shelter without a care for that which it shelters: people. we have a fundamental responsibility to the intrinsic notions of civilization towards the quest for a life greater than those who came before us to build upon their dreams to build a place where our children will dream. art becomes the vehicle, the motivator of architecture

more art - earlier works

uploaded some of my earlier works, some dating back to 1996. they're here more for me than anything, just to remember the process and the thinking. i think it is always good to revisit old works to reassess what went into them, the process of decision making, rationalisms, serendipity, etc. they are easy to spot because they had analog names and not digital numbers.
